7 tips for a relaxing bedroom

7 tips for a (really) relaxing bedroom

Dreaming of a bedroom that’s an oasis of calm, where you can escape the hustle and bustle of family life and (dare we say it) work life as well? From curtains and mattresses to bedding, decorative touches and everything in between, here are 7 tips for how to turn an everyday bedroom into a cozy and relaxing bedroom retreat.

1

Choose soft colours and simple lines

To create a relaxing bedroom atmosphere, opt for a pale and soft colour palette. Neutral shades such as gray, ecru, blue or white have a calming effect, and you can add depth to your decor by using a variety of textures. Bright shades more your style? Indulge in a few key accessories to add a splash of colour.

When it comes to choosing furniture, keep it simple: basic shapes work best, especially when arranged symmetrically. Clean, simple lines can instantly make your bedroom feel peaceful, neat and tidy (just think of what they could do in the playroom, or even your home office!).

2

Lower the temperature

Did you know that as you begin to fall asleep, your body temperature naturally begins to decrease by 1 or 2 degrees? To help you fall asleep more easily, keep the temperature in your bedroom between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius. This way, you can snuggle up under the covers and nod off with a cool head on the pillow.

If you prefer to sleep in a warmer room, make sure to keep it properly ventilated during the day.

3

Sleep in the dark

Curtains are an easy, intimate way to adjust brightness to suit your sleep schedule.

Opt for opaque curtains which block roughly 95% of outside light, or take things one step further with insulating opaque curtains, which also help keep the room temperature constant.

According to experts, sleeping in total darkness promotes a restful sleep (as a bonus, it also means kitty can’t play hide-and-seek with its shadow in the wee hours). Blackout curtains have a lining that completely blocks sunlight, creating the perfect darkness considered ideal for a good night’s sleep.

4

Declutter!

To completely cut yourself off from the world beyond the bedroom door, ban everything that doesn’t belong (yes, building blocks and stationary bike, we mean you). And do not, under any circumstances, allow any paperwork or anything else work-related (cell phone, anyone?) enter the sanctity of a relaxing bedroom.

Solve your storage problems by opting for tall dressers with several drawers, and top things off with a decorative tray for your jewellery and accessories. A relaxing bedroom is first and foremost spacious, clean and clutter-free (check out our 5 easy home storage tips for more ideas!).

5

Invest in a good mattress

A good mattress is your best ally for a good night’s sleep. But even the best mattress won’t last forever, and will need to be replaced every 10 years or so.

Want maximum comfort? A pillow top pocket spring mattress allows for easy movement (goodbye, tossing and turning!) while offering enough support for two people. A memory foam or cool air gel memory foam mattress provides ergonomic support and a temperature-controlled surface. And for the best of both worlds, there are also hybrid mattresses.

Finding it hard to choose between models? When shopping for a new mattress, be sure to check what it’s made of, whether it’s certified and what type of warranty is offered—and don’t hesitate to lie back and give your favourite sleeping position a try (just don’t get so comfortable that you fall asleep in the store!).

6

Buy breathable, comfortable bedding

The type of bedding and sheets you use are also key to ensuring you sleep soundly. All-natural 100% cotton sheets let your body breathe and help control night sweats. You’ll love how soft they feel against your skin when you crawl under the covers.

In the morning, don’t make your bed right away (sorry, mum). Instead, let it air out awhile to remove all traces of moisture. And to keep your sheets looking as beautiful as the day you bought them, wash them regularly with a gentle laundry soap according to the label.

7

Make it your own

Your bedroom is a private place that belongs to you—or you and your partner—alone (well, except for on those stormy nights when everyone and the kitchen sink seems to climb in unannounced).

Make it your sanctuary by enhancing the decor with things you like and that show off your style: an imposing headboard, a clever display of wall art, a pair of modern pendants over your nightstands, a touch of greenery… .

And to up the comfort level of your relaxing bedroom, consider adding a chair or a bench. And don’t forget the decorative cushions, throws and extra blankets!

A rug will bring structure to the room without over-cluttering it. Choose a silk rug, famous for their silky (duh!) softness, or greet your feet every morning with a warm, fluffy wool rug.

Last but not least, make sure all bedroom lighting is equipped with a dimmer switch so that you can dim the lights and create a relaxing, or even romantic, atmosphere at the touch of a button.
