February 18th, 2021

How to choose a rug for your space

Rugs are more than just a simple decoration. Indeed, they are a great way to show off your personal style while tying the room's furniture together. Not sure how to pick the right rug to dress up your floor? Our lookbook will break down the essentials to help you find the perfect match.

HOW TO CHOOSE A RUG STYLE?

First, you need to choose the style of the rug! You will need to skim through the different designs, textiles and colours and decide which rug will blend seamlessly with your space.

1. COLOUR

To tie the room together, select a rug that matches the two or three main colours of the decor. Don't forget to take into consideration the area dedicated to the carpet as well as the foot traffic. An important factor when choosing a colour. For example, do you have young children or pets? Or is it a high-traffic area such as the entryway? In both cases, avoid selecting a light-coloured carpet because it will wear out faster (not to mention its high maintenance!).

2. MATERIAL

A wool rug will instantly warm up your space. Moreover, depending on its thickness, it can insulate your space. Cotton, polyester or viscose rugs are very versatile and offer you a wide range of colours and styles. Also, think of the texture! A tufted or knitted rug is sure to add a cozy touch to your decor. There’s nothing like having a soft texture under your feet. However, it's best to avoid textured carpets in the dining room or in the office as they will make it difficult to move chairs around.

3. DESIGN

In the end, choose a rug that matches your taste and your room style. A boldly patterned rug can fill up a large space and add some depth, while a rug with a minimalist design provides a cozy touch to your room.

Having a hard time visualizing the rug size?
Use a painter's tape or take a bed sheet and fold it on the floor.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR RUG SIZE?

Once you've made a decision about the style, it's time to choose the location and size of the rug! To do so, take into consideration the size of your space as well as the furniture you own. Bear in mind, this step is very important. A too-small rug in a large space could give an unfinished and inconsistent look, while a small room with a too-large rug will result in a crowded room.

The bedroom

The bedroom offers you several options. If you have a lot of space, put the rug horizontally under the end of the bed, or put two rugs on each side of the bed in a vertical position (see figure A). This way, you’ll anchor the bed in the room and make it its focal point.

In a smaller room (or a room with lots of furniture), place the rug under the bed in a horizontal position so that the rug protrudes from the end and sides of the bed (see figure B). This rug position will make your room look much wider while welcoming your feet when you get up.

The living room

The living room is a complex room. But don't worry, the possibilities are endless! Keep in mind this golden rule: the rug must be at least as wide as your couch. If you have a wide living room or an open space concept; a big carpet will emphasize the room’s size while defining the living room space. You can then either decide to position your rug entirely (see figure C) or partially (see figure D) under the main furniture of the room. You choose!

In a small space, place a smaller carpet in front of the sofa and/or in the middle of the main furniture, beneath the coffee table (see figure E). You can also slide the carpet under the two front legs of the main sofa. This way, you can still see a portion of the floor, giving the illusion of a bigger room. Think of putting a round carpet like PERU!

The dining room

A rug is always a good idea in the dining room! It adds a finishing touch to your decor and protects your floors from chair legs scratches. Unlike other rooms, finding a rug for the dining room is a breeze. All you must do is follow this one rule: choose a rug that is bigger than your entire furniture set. Make sure that the rug is big enough to cover the floor under all your dining chairs, even when pushed back (see figure F).

The office

Just like in the dining room, a carpet in the office is useful to protect your floor from chair leg markings (especially from those with wheels!). Think of putting your desk and rug (like our duo ASPEN & BITAR) in the middle of the room to create a beautiful focal point (see figure G).

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR RUG?

Like any kind of textile, it is important to clean your rug. Thus, you will extend its lifespan. Because a rug faces daily wear and tear (shoes, crumbs, dust, pet hair, etc.) it will have to be cleaned on a regular basis. Moreover, a rug that is not correctly cleaned can become the ideal refuge for moths and mites! Therefore, we strongly recommend that you vacuum it with the grain every week. But above all, avoid soaking the rug with water, proceed with dry cleaning or call a professional.
